The ICC Cricket World Cup continued on Wednesday with hosts India cruising to victory over Afghanistan courtesy of a Rohit Sharma century in Delhi.
The visitors opted to bat first on a fast pitch that looked ideal for it. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 80 as Afghanistan set a target of 273 for the men in blue.
The score may well have been a bigger one had Jasprit Bumrah not struck four times for just 39 in his 10 overs.
Rohit raised eyebrows when he said he would have liked to bat second anyway, but it all made sense once he came out at the top of the order.
The Indian skipper scored the fastest century by an Indian player at one-day World Cups, and now also has the most centuries in the tournament, as he put 131 on the scoreboard off just 84 deliveries.
Ishan Kishan supported him well for his 47 — but it was Virat Kohli, in the city of his birth, who hit the winning runs and got to an unbeaten half century.
Back-to-back wins now leave both India and Pakistan in good form going into the most anticipated game of the group stages when the rivals face off in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
Before that, though, the Proteas must face Australia on Thursday in Lucknow while New Zealand take on Bangladesh in Chennai on Friday.
