Mamelodi Sundowns extended their unbeaten streak over Kaizer Chiefs to 12 games with a 1-0 victory at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
The Brazilians were last beaten by Amakhosi back in 2021 during the Covid-19 era, in a match played behind closed doors.
Roll forward the clock four years and Sundowns are sitting comfortably at the top of the PSL, nearly 30 points clear of Chiefs.
Despite the gap between the sides, the Soweto giants arrived in Atteridgeville with hope and strong resolve; and they certainly did not allow any gulf in class to show on the pitch.
For Sundowns to win, it would have to take something truly special. Luckily for them, Lucas Ribeiro would deliver the goods.
The 26-year-old unleashed a powerful strike just minutes before half-time, putting to bed the otherwise evenly contested affair.
“First of all, congrats to Sundowns for the three points, I feel frustrated for my players, for the fans, for everyone supporting Kaizer Chiefs today,” Amakhosi boss Nasreddine Nabi said.
“We feel we had a strong performance that could have given us something better than what we go, but that is football and we have to accept it.”
Chiefs next take on Magesi FC on Tuesday before the leaders face Lamontville Golden Arrows on Wednesday.
