Residents told to report staff begging for Christmas gifts

  • The waste company says staff are not allowed to ask for gifts and residents should report them immediately.
  • Trucks will be on the road on Day of Goodwill and New Year’s Day but will rest on Christmas.

Pikitup has issued a strong warning to its employees: stop begging for gifts.

The City of Johannesburg’s waste management company says it is concerned about a growing trend.

Workers have been going door-to-door, pressuring residents to give them “festive gifts” or “Christmas boxes”.

The company says it has received complaints from communities across all 12 of its depots.

Pikitup wants to make one thing clear. This behaviour is banned.

The company has a strict policy that does not allow employees to ask for or accept gifts from the public.

They are asking residents to help stop the practice.

“Residents who see this happening should take note of the truck’s registration number and report it,” the company said.

While the begging is bad news, the schedule is good news. Pikitup will collect waste as usual throughout the festive season.

Trucks will be running on 16 December, 26 December and even New Year’s Day.

The only day they will take a break is Christmas Day, 25 December.

Households with extra holiday rubbish are encouraged to use the city’s waste management facilities to keep their communities clean.
