The sunrise session held at The Spade four-star boutique hotel and spa in Khayelitsha township on Thursday tackled the pressing issue of boosting the local township economy.
Representatives and entrepreneurs gathered to discuss strategies to uplift the township economy and shed light on the potential it holds.
Vusi Vokwana, representing the Township Economic Commission, highlighted the importance of addressing this need, which was identified by the presidency.
“We are taking the fundamental principles we’ve learned within this market and exposing them to the urban population that might be unaware of the dynamics of township economies.
“The objective is to bridge the knowledge gap between different markets and promote mutual growth,” said Vokwana.
Devi Paulsen-Abbott, chairperson of the African Association of Exhibitions, underscored the purpose of showcasing the abundant opportunities in the township economy.
“We’re putting the township economy in the spotlight, demonstrating to our members that our township’s infrastructure is of a high standard, and the venue we’ve chosen for the event, The Spade Hotel, perfectly embodies this idea,” said Paulsen-Abbott.
“We are encouraging international involvement in our townships, encouraging events and other activities. By doing so, we are actively pursuing the enhancement of the township economy.”
Paulsen-Abbott acknowledged the substantial time it will take to change the preconceived notions surrounding township economies.
“Our objective also involves showcasing this hotel. Regrettably, not many are aware of its existence, and we are committed to revealing the hidden gems in our townships,” said Paulsen-Abbott.
Sicelo Mdikana, a 35-year-old entrepreneur, shared the challenges faced by local businesses, notably the struggle to secure funding.
“If we could access funding more easily, without being inundated with extensive demands, we could collectively drive the growth of the township economy, and this would also educate people about the dynamics of township businesses,” said Mdikana.
