Reporter robbed live on-air in Qatar

Journalist Dominique Metzger was robbed while covering the Fifa World Cup live on-air in Doha, Qatar on Sunday.

Reporting for Todo Noticias (TN) network in the Corniche area of Doha prior to the opening ceremony, Metzger had money, credit cards, and documents stolen from her handbag.

“Don’t worry, I’m fine,” she told her 263,000 Instagram followers.

“I went through a situation that we talk about all the time. The difference is that it happened here in Doha which they say is the safest place,” continued Metzger.

Qatar has some of the lowest crime rates of any country in the Middle East.

She added that the robbery was not violent and she was also not expecting to be robbed.

“It was a theft, it was not violent at all,” said Metzger.

What surprised Metzger more than the robbery was the reaction of the police.

“I went to the station and the cultural differences began,” she said.

She said the policewoman told her they have high-tech cameras everywhere and we’re going to locate him with face detection.

“They insisted on asking me what penalty I wanted so that I could decide,” she said.

She said all she wanted was “for my things to appear”.

She also said that the police asked her what sentence she wanted them to give him or if she wanted him deported.

“I did not want to put myself in the place of justice.”

Metzger has since got on with her work and attended the opening game of the tournament where hosts Qatar were defeated 2-0 by Ecuador.
