Reed Dance maiden Ntombifuthi Ngubane stole the show at the University of KwaZulu-Natal graduation ceremony on Thursday when she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Ngubane’s lively performance of the traditional maiden dance added excitement to the graduation ceremony celebrations.
Ngubane was one of the thousands of maidens who attended the 40th anniversary of the Reed Dance, held at eNyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma at the weekend.
During the event, maidens received blessings from King Misuzulu kaZwelithini. For many, it was their final time attending the Reed Dance before moving into a new phase of their lives, including marriage.
UKZN spokesperson Norma Zondo said about 1,500 students received their degrees at the spring graduation ceremonies on September 18 and 19.
Among the notable graduates was 26-year-old PhD student Mikyle David, the youngest doctoral graduate, and Deborah Masipa, who earned her Bachelor of Law degree.
The youngest undergraduate, Anele Mazibuko, 21, was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Cultural and Heritage Tourism) degree.
UKZN is known for embracing diverse cultural expression, allowing students to celebrate their unique traditions.
