Mamelodi Sundowns broke another of their own records following Tuesday’s 2-1 PSL victory over Sekhukhune United at Loftus Versfeld.
The slim victory took the Brazilians to 22 successive unbeaten league games since the start of the PSL season.
They have now beaten their previous record of 21 games without tasting defeat.
In total, they are on a 46-match undefeated run in the PSL, having last lost a game in September 2022 when they were edged 2-1 by SuperSport United.
Rhulani Mokwena has yet to lead Sundowns to a league loss since being appointed head coach in October 2022.
The victory over Sekhukhune leaves Sundowns just two victories away from reaching the 62-point mark and being confirmed as champions for a record-extending seventh consecutive season.
Masandawana has achieved the latest record despite being unconvincing in recent games.
But they could argue that the Babina Noko win came on an evening when Mokwena fielded 11 different players from those who were in the line-up when they lost 1-0 away to Esperance in a CAF Champions League semi-final, first-leg showdown last weekend.
It was a show of depth for Sundowns who now prepare to host the Tunisians on Friday in a sink-or-swim match at Loftus Versfeld where Mokwena wants their fans to create an intimidating atmosphere.
“It’s a big match. I plead with the Sundowns supporters to come in numbers and support, sing and beat the drum. We need them,” Mokwena told SuperSport TV after the Sekhukhune win.
“This is the Champions League game. We need them more than ever.”
He said the stadium must be full and buzzing and extremely intimidating for the opponents.
“Without that, we are in a little bit of trouble. But you know we can do it in front of our people. We love them and will fight, sacrifice, and die for them,” he said.
