- President Cyril Ramaphosa bumped into actress Leleti Khumalo at OR Tambo International Airport after the G7 summit trip.
- Khumalo and producer Anant Singh won the Golden Nymph Award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival for the short film Don’t Give Up.
President Cyril Ramaphosa ran into South African actress Leleti Khumalo at OR Tambo International Airport and congratulated her on winning a top international award.
The chance meeting happened during the president’s trip to and from the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Canada.
“On my travels to and from the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Canada, I had the good and proud fortune of bumping into our veteran star performer Leleti Khumalo at OR Tambo International Airport,” Ramaphosa said on X.
He said he felt proud to see her and called it a special moment.
Khumalo had just returned from the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in Monaco, where she struck gold.
She and film producer Anant Singh won the Golden Nymph Award for their short film Don’t Give Up.
The film tells the emotional story of a mother with two children living and begging on the streets of Johannesburg.
Ramaphosa congratulated them for their great work and for showing one of South Africa’s real problems.
Khumalo is one of South Africa’s most loved actresses, who became famous for her lead role in Sarafina!, both the movie and the stage play.
She has also acted in movies like Hotel Rwanda, Yesterday and Invictus.
On TV, she played MaNzuza in Uzalo, MaZulu in Imbewu: The Seed, and now appears as Dr Ximba in Muvhango.
The president thanked Khumalo and Singh for making South Africa proud and for using film to tell powerful stories that matter.
“I congratulate Leleti Khumalo and Anant Singh for flying our flag and for spotlighting one of our nation’s socio-economic challenges,” he posted.
