On a visit to Cape Town Port on Tuesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the rise of Covid-19 infections in Gauteng has become a major concern for the nation.
“Clearly there seems to be indications we have to increase the measures, particularly in Gauteng,” he said.
Of the 13,155 new cases reported on Monday, 66% were registered in Gauteng. The infection rate in the province has already passed the highest peak of the first two waves.
The president says it may be time for the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) to review the lockdown regulations.
He is however careful not to harm the economy any further as thousands of businesses closed shop after 15 months of lockdown.
On Sunday, it was confirmed that across Gauteng, there were 5,218 patients admitted to hospital, with 1,105 of these in ICU and 538 who have required ventilation.
The seven-day average in the province also stood at 6,941, which is 31% higher than the second wave peak.
The president last week moved South Africa back to level three lockdown, which saw a change in curfew, a reduced number of individuals permitted at gatherings as well as restrictions to the sale of alcohol.
