Rain and cold hit Gauteng after week of heat

By Rorisang Modiba

  • The South African Weather Service says Johannesburg will have a minimum of 11°C and a high of 23°C on Monday.
  • Pretoria is expected to have a minimum of 12°C and high of 26°C on Monday before the weather gets warmer.

Although it is still summer in South Africa, Gauteng residents are now experiencing much cooler weather. The change comes after last week’s heatwave conditions, when temperatures climbed above 30°C in the province’s two major cities.

A cut-off low weather system has brought the cooler conditions to parts of Gauteng. The weather system has brought cloudy skies, wind and rain to the province. This has caused temperatures to drop significantly after the recent heatwave conditions.

In Johannesburg, temperatures recently went above 30°C during last week’s hot weather. Now, the South African Weather Service (Saws) says Johannesburg will have a minimum temperature of 11°C and a high of 23°C on Monday.

Pretoria also experienced hot weather during the heatwave, with the capital city reaching 33°C last week. On Monday, Pretoria is expected to have a minimum temperature of 12°C and a high of 26°C.

The cooler weather is not expected to last for very long, however. The weather is expected to become warmer again later in the week.

The bad weather conditions have also led to safety warnings for drivers across the province. Drivers have been advised to be careful on the roads because of the bad weather currently affecting Gauteng.

Saws has not issued any weather alerts for Gauteng on Monday.

However, other parts of South Africa are experiencing very different weather conditions than Gauteng. Saws has warned of extremely high fire danger in parts of the Northern Cape and Western Cape, where very hot conditions are expected.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Gezani is growing stronger over the Indian Ocean. The storm first formed over the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. It has since made landfall there as a tropical cyclone.
