Radio star Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma takes Vuma FM to court

  • Ngobese-Zuma says Vuma FM refused to explain why her six-year contract ended.
  • The activist believes her work with the March in March movement may have influenced the station’s decision to cut ties.

Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma says she has no choice but to fight her former employer in court after what she calls an unfair and unexplained dismissal.

The long-time presenter and activist worked at Vuma FM for six years, calling the station her “second home”. But in July her contract was suddenly terminated.

Her lawyers wrote to the station on 1 August asking for reasons. Vuma FM only responded three weeks later, on 21 August, but still gave no explanation. “They claimed they don’t have to give reasons. I don’t accept that,” said Ngobese-Zuma.

She said her reputation is on the line. “In radio, reputation is everything. I cannot leave under a cloud of doubt while false stories spread.”

Ngobese-Zuma believes her activism may have played a role in her sudden exit. Earlier this year, she started the March in March movement, which campaigns against illegal immigration.

The campaign has drawn criticism from politicians, the Helen Suzman Foundation and some government officials.

Despite the legal battle, Ngobese-Zuma says she is pushing ahead with new projects while her lawyers take on the case.
