The Proteas cricket team will play Afghanistan in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup on Thursday at 2.30am South African time.

The announcement was made on Tuesday.

Afghanistan, a surprise contender in the tournament, earned their place in the semifinals by beating Bangladesh by eight runs in the last Super 8 match held in Saint Vincent in the Caribbean early on Tuesday morning.

This win saw Afghanistan finish second in their group, earning their first playoff appearance in a World Cup.

The Proteas, who remained unbeaten throughout the first two rounds, will play Afghanistan in Trinidad and Tobago in the first semifinal match.

In the other semifinal, India, also unbeaten after seven matches, will face the defending champions, England, later on Thursday at 4.30pm South African time in Guyana.

The T20 World Cup final is scheduled to be played in Barbados on Saturday.
