Proteas pocket R12.8-million after T20 World Cup semifinal exit

  • India won the tournament and earned R48.7-million. The R219-million total prize purse was the biggest in the competition’s 19-year history.

The Proteas reached the semifinals of the T20 World Cup in India last week. They faced New Zealand and lost, missing out on a place in the final.

South Africa will not walk away empty-handed though. The team will receive R12.8-million in prize money from the International Cricket Council (ICC). The money is expected to be shared among the 15-man squad and team management.

England also failed to make it out of the semifinals. They lost to tournament hosts India and will take home the same prize money as South Africa. England will also receive R12.8-million.

New Zealand made it all the way to the final but lost to India. For reaching the final, New Zealand will take home R26-million.

India defended their T20 World Cup title by beating New Zealand in the final. The hosts earned R48.7-million for winning the competition.

Teams that finished between fifth and 12th place received R6.2-million each. Those that came in between 13th and 20th place got R4.1-million each.

The total prize purse for this year’s tournament was R219-million. That is the biggest in the 19-year history of the competition and a 20% jump from the 2024 edition.
