President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned the nation to keep adhering to lockdown regulations, as it has become clear that Covid is far from finished with us.

“It increased more than fifteen-fold from the last low point,” said the President in a letter.

He said that though we may be tired of Covid-19, the virus was not tired of us as people are still getting infected and dying from the pandemic.

“Our people know that we can control the virus, but it requires all of us to act together over time. It is not a task only for the vulnerable or the healthcare system. It requires every South African to do their part and build a new normal that is safe for us all.”

He added that the government was planning to provide vaccinations for the majority of adults by the end of the year.

“It is crucial that, when you become eligible, you get the jab as soon as possible. Our priority in this phase is to vaccinate all five million people over the age of 60. This week, we also plan to start vaccinating half a million educators,” he said.

The number of daily new infections jumped from below 800 in early April to over 13,000 in the past week.

In the last 24 hours 13,155 cases were recorded.

South Africa’s Covid-19 death toll stands at 58,702.

President Ramaphosa, the French President Emmanuel Macron, and WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus will have a joint media briefing on Covid-19 vaccines on Monday afternoon.
