Premier League to vote on scrapping video ref

Premier League clubs will vote next month on Wolves’s proposal to scrap the video assistant referee (VAR) system from next season.

Wolves launched the vote after experiencing multiple controversial VAR decisions.

To pass the proposal, 14 out of the 20 clubs must vote in favour at the annual general meeting in Harrogate on 6 June.

However, Premier League sources, the Daily Mail reported, believe it is unlikely to succeed, as they are confident they have enough votes to block it.

Supporters of VAR use statistics to show an increase in correct decisions from 82% to 96% since its introduction in 2019. They also speak on upcoming improvements, such as semi-automated offside calls, which are expected to speed up decision-making.

Despite these improvements, Wolves said in a statement that “after careful consideration and with the utmost respect for the Premier League, the referees, and our fellow competitors”, it is time for a critical debate on VAR’s future.

A Premier League spokesperson said the body will “facilitate a discussion on VAR with our clubs at the annual general meeting next month.

“However, the league fully supports the use of VAR and remains committed, alongside the referees, to make continued improvements to the system for the benefit of the game and fans.”

Wolves have used several reasons for their proposal, including VAR’s negative impact on goal celebrations, frustration over lengthy decisions, and a hostile atmosphere in stadiums.

Last month, Sweden became the first country to reject VAR after a backlash from fans.
