A Premier League footballer had to be treated by paramedics after being found with many laughing gas canisters at his home.
This incident, confirmed by Mail Sport through a close friend of the player, happened after the footballer, an Under-21 international, relapsed following a period in rehabilitation to try to overcome his addiction to nitrous oxide.
The emergency services were alerted and arrived at his city-centre flat to provide medical checks and warnings about the dangers associated with the substance.
Police were also present, though no criminal charges are expected as the player did not appear to be distributing the substance.
The footballer’s club has been supportive throughout his struggles, having previously arranged for his treatment at a specialised rehab centre.
Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, known as “hippy crack”, became a Class C controlled drug in November under the new legislation, with it now being illegal to keep the gas for inhaling purposes.
The use of nitrous oxide is reportedly widespread among professional athletes, particularly footballers, as routine drug tests do not typically detect it.
Past incidents involving high-profile players show the ongoing issue within the sport.
The player in question reportedly remains determined to overcome his addiction.
