Political parties scramble to win voters in Nkandla

The EFF and ANC have promised to build houses for poor families in Nkandla in a scramble to win voters in former president Jacob Zuma’s rural hometown.

Nkandla municipality is currently governed by the IFP, which is a popular party in the KwaZulu-Natal northern rural town.

It would not be the first time Julius Malema’s EFF would build a house for Zuma’s neighbours.

In 2014, the EFF built a house for Sthandiwe Hlongwane, who lives a stone’s throw from Zuma’s compound, ahead of the 2014 national elections, where the EFF got more than 1.1 million votes.

However, questions are being asked whether it is still relevant to campaign at Zuma’s backyard in Nkandla, where his own neighbours snubbed his party, the ANC, even when he was still president of the country between 2009 and 2018.

In an interview with Scrolla.Africa, Malema said he was gunning for all wards in KZN.

“We will campaign everywhere, even in the backyard of Zuma in Nkandla,” he said.

Malema was blocked from campaigning in KwaDambuza by ANC members on Saturday.

Reacting to this, Malema said no place should be a no-go area in South Africa.

“We can’t allow ANC crooks to block us from campaigning anywhere in the country,” Malema said, adding, “We will meet them toe to toe if they want a fight with us.”

The ANC in the Moses Mabhida region is now promising to build a house for the Mhlongo family in Nkandla.

The IEC has encouraged more South Africans to register to vote online after the registration weekend ahead of the 1 November elections.
