A police officer has been shot dead during a shootout with criminals who attempted to rob a cash-in-transit facility in East London.

The attempted heist happened around 10 pm on Monday night at Fidelity guard offices at Westbank.

The deceased officer was a member of Public Order Police Services, while two other security guards who were also shot are recovering at a hospital in East London.

Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, spoke to Scrolla.Africa.

“The heist involved four bakkie vehicles where two Ford Rangers were abandoned in the process. The criminals went to the facility with explosive devices with the intention to bomb the facility but were caught in that process, which is how the shootout ensued,” she said.

Since the news, MEC of Transport and Community Safety in Eastern Cape, Xolile Nqatha, has relayed his condolences to the family of the slain member of the police.
