A police general, three brigadiers and three colonels have been arrested for tender fraud in early morning raids.
The dramatic takedown of so many senior SAPS officers — dubbed “the night of the falling stars” — is unprecedented.
The police said the arrests follow a three-year investigation by a special task team reporting to National Commissioner of Police, General Khehle Sitole, investigating tender fraud in the marking of police vehicles. Six private-sector businesspeople were also arrested.
The arrested officers are:
•Retired Lieutenant General Ramahlapi Mokwena
•Brigadiers James Ramanjalum, Jabez Naidoo and Lesetja David Mogotlane
•Colonels Thomas Dumisani Marim and Veeran Naipal
•Lieutenant Colonel Alpheus Makhetha.
Charges include fraud, corruption, theft and money laundering.
“I am confident that the cases against the arrested suspects are watertight,” General Sitole said.
