Poisoned cheesecake: a Russian’s recipe for identity theft

A woman born in Russia has been handed two decades behind bars for trying to kill someone who looked like her by feeding her a slice of poisoned cheesecake.

And it wasn’t jealousy that led to the attempted murder but rather a ploy to steal the look-alike’s identity.

The Russian clearly wanted to be an American, not something you hear every day.

In 2016, Viktoria Nasyrova, 47, gave a cheesecake laced with a sedative to Olga Tsvyk, a woman living in New York, in an attempt to steal her identity, prosecutors said in a statement.

The Russian was sentenced to 21 years in jail on Wednesday.

Nasyrova had a well thought out plan for the attack. Her American lookalike was a beautician, and the Russian needed her eyelashes done.

Without knowing her lookalike at all, she asked for an “eyelash emergency” and to thank her for helping at such short notice, Nasyrova offered the woman a delicious-looking cheesecake.

Tsvyk, an American who also spoke Russian, began feeling sick after eating the cake and eventually passed out, Insider reported.

The American was later found unconscious in her bed with pills scattered all around her, making it look as if she had attempted to take her own life.

But she survived after being rushed to hospital.

After waking up, Tsvyk noticed her Ukrainian passport, employment card and gold ring, amongst other valuables, were missing.

“A ruthless and calculating con artist is going to prison for a long time for trying to murder her way to personal profit and gain,” Queens district attorney Melinda Katz said on Wednesday.

Next time someone who looks exactly like you hands you a cheesecake, perhaps test it for poison first.
