A Cessna aircraft crash landed into a residential area in Gqeberha on Thursday after it ran out of fuel.
According to police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, the aircraft was on its way from the Northern Cape to Chief Dawid Stuurman International (previously Port Elizabeth) Airport.
He said the 75-year-old pilot told police the craft ran out of fuel, leaving him with no choice but to make an emergency landing.
“Unfortunately a pothole and speed bump in the road caused the aircraft to swerve and hit a lamp post. The aircraft’s wings and tail section were damaged in the incident. No injuries were reported by the pilot and his two passengers,” Beetge said.
No pedestrians or other traffic on the road were affected by the landing incident.
Fire and emergency services acting senior director Hendrik McLeod said the three flyers refused medical attention.
“All code green, meaning no serious injuries,” McLeod said.
Beetge said the aircraft was released to its owner after the fire department cleared it.
