Pitso Mosimane will leave Saudi Arabia on a sad note after failing to help Abha Club avoid relegation on the final day of the season.
Abha suffered a 2-1 away defeat to bottom-placed Al Hazm on a night when they needed a win to stay clear of the drop.
Mastermind South African coach Mosimane joined Abha in January with the sole objective of helping the club retain their Saudi Pro League status.
It was not to be, though, with the club ending the campaign with the worst defensive record in the league, conceding 87 times throughout the season.
Ahmed Abdu Jaber made it 1-0 to Al Hazm before Gambian forward Muhammed Badamosi levelled matters for Abha. It would all end in tears with 10 minutes to play, as Mohammed Al-Thani made it 2-1 to the hosts.
Mosimane announced in a post-match interview that he would now leave the club following the expiration of his contract.
“I took a risk. I knew it was a difficult task, but I had hope when we got out of the danger zone three times,” Mosimane told reporters.
“Everything must be accepted, and my contract with the club expires today.”
