Pirates make Sevilla walk the plank

By Razeen Gutta

Orlando Pirates registered a promising 2-0 away preseason victory over La Liga giants Sevilla on Monday night.

The Buccaneers picked up their first win of the tour, with Jose Riveiro making several alterations to the side that drew 2-2 with Plymouth Argyle on Friday.

Both sides had opportunities early on, with the hosts coming closest through former Liverpool attacking midfielder Suso, whose free-kick only narrowly missed the mark.

The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Miguel Timm scored off a Relebohile Mofokeng cross.

Riveiro went all change in the second half, with new man Gilberto making an impressive debut.

Sevilla roared on in pursuit of an equaliser, but the Soweto giants stayed calm and composed at the back to prevent that.

Kabelo Dlamini doubled the advantage with a stunning effort from range, adding icing to the cake.

Melusi Buthelezi’s performance in the Pirates’ goal was tested until the end, with his denial of a Lucas Ocampos close-range header at the death ensuring there would be no late comebacks.

Pirates next face Granada on Wednesday.
