- Orlando Pirates players are back on top of the league table after beating AmaZulu three goals to nothing on Saturday.
- Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says his players have a lot of confidence before they play against Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says his players are full of confidence ahead of the big Soweto derby.
The team will play Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
The confidence comes after Pirates beat AmaZulu three-nil on Saturday. The match took place at the Orlando Amstel Arena.
Yanela Mbuthuma, Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng scored the goals. The win helped the team bounce back after a two-all draw against Richards Bay FC in their previous game.
Pirates are now at the top of the Betway Premiership log with 58 points from 25 games. They are two points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns in second place.
But Sundowns have two games in hand. The Brazilians could take back the number one spot if they beat Stellenbosch FC at home on Wednesday.
Ouaddou says the win over AmaZulu was exactly what the team needed right now.
“This was a very good moment for the guys and it is even better before the derby,” Ouaddou said. “It gives a lot of confidence to the boys.”
Ouaddou says the team will not change the way they play for the match against Chiefs. He says he trusts his group of players completely.
“We play every game to win and we haven’t altered that when playing home or away,” he said. “When you coach Pirates, you play attacking football.”
The team has scored 50 league goals this season. They only need three more goals to break their own record. Kosta Papic’s team scored 52 goals in a 30-game season back in 2004/05.
Fans are waiting to see if Pirates can beat their Soweto rivals again. Pirates beat Chiefs three-nil in the first round of the season at the same stadium.
