PICK OF THE SPORTS: The Olympics race onto the track

This weekend the great spectacle of the Olympics athletics events kicks off in Tokyo. 

The qualifying heats for the women’s 100m will be followed by the men’s high jump. The women’s 800m opening rounds, as well as the 5,000m, will all take place this Friday. 

The men’s 10,000m will end the athletic action for the day, in what will be a hot contest for a place on the podium. There will be 10 Africans competing in an event which has been dominated by our continent.

On Saturday, the women’s 100m final will see a fight for the gold medal. 

The men’s 100m opening stages also gets underway, with Akani Simbine of South Africa in contention. He recently broke the African record and will be hoping for a podium finish.

The men’s 100m final will take place at 2:50pm on Sunday – in what is set to be a blockbuster event with the entire world watching. 

There will be many semifinals action in the athletics, including the men’s 800m, men’s 400m hurdles as well as the women’s 100m hurdles. 

Fans are spoilt for choice in Olympic action, with all the action being broadcast live on DStv’s eight channels dedicated to Tokyo 2020. Showmax Pro is also streaming all the action.

➤ The British & Irish Lions rugby series against the Springboks will continue this weekend after Warren Gatland’s men were victorious in last Saturday’s fixture. The Springbok world cup champions, however, will be looking to redeem themselves at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.

The second of three test matches will kickoff at 18:00pm, on DSTv channel 201. 

Formula One action is back this weekend with the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen continue their battle to become world champion. At the last race, the two were involved in a massive accident that has caused a dispute between the two teams. 

With the seven-times World Champion Lewis Hamilton only eight points behind Max Verstappen, the fight for first place is set to be aggressively contested. Verstappen is out to win his first championship. The British driver is aiming to defend his title in what has made for some of the most exciting Formula One action we have seen in recent years. 

The race starts at 3pm on Sunday on DSTv channel 215.
