PICK OF THE SPORTS: A feast of football to fire up the weekend!

With domestic football back in full swing, football fans can expect a barrage of enthralling football action to watch on their screens this weekend.

➤ The Premier League made its return after a two-week winter break with mid-week action and the drama continues into the weekend as the season moves into high gear.

Saturday’s action starts off with a potential upset as Manchester United take on Southampton. United came off the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw with Burnley while Southampton shocked Tottenham Hotspur with a 3-2 victory.

The clash between United and Southampton is set for kickoff at 2.30pm on Saturday.

Sunday will see a host of exciting matchups as Newcastle take on Aston Villa and Tottenham host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 4pm kickoffs. The day concludes with Leicester facing West Ham at 6.30pm.

While the matchups may not look overly exciting on paper, many of the fixtures have teams in and around each other facing off in matches that could have major repercussions at the end of the season.

➤ The FIFA Club World Cup final is upon us as English club Chelsea are hoping that lightning does not strike in the same place twice in the United Arab Emirates.

The Club World Cup brings together the best teams from each continent to battle it out for the title of best team in the world. Chelsea will take on Brazilian side Palmeiras at 6.30pm.

The last time Chelsea participated in the event was 2012 when they lost out to Brazilian side Corinthians.

This is the only trophy that has not been seen in the glorious Chelsea trophy cabinet and the players will feel obligated to fully furnish the trophy wall with a victory on Saturday.

However, Chelsea have not been at their best in recent months and Palmeiras will definitely feel there is an opportunity to cause an upset.

➤ The CAF Champions League makes its return since last October with the group stages getting underway this Saturday.

South African sides Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu will be in action in the group stage openers with Sundowns taking on Al-Hilal of Sudan at 6pm on Friday. AmaZulu face the tough challenge of Raja Casablanca in their debut campaign on Saturday at 8.30pm.

The Brazilians will be hoping to match the efforts of Kaizer Chiefs who made it to last year’s final, losing 3-0 to Al Ahly in Morocco.

Sundowns’ clash in the CAF Champions League action can be seen live on DStv channel 202. AmaZulu’s fixture will not be televised in South Africa.
