Peseiro leaves Nigeria

By Razeen Gutta

Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has departed Nigeria after the expiration of his contract with the national team.

The Portuguese led Nigeria to the Africa Cup of Nations final this year, exceeding expectations.

He said he feels a “sense of fulfilment” about his stint as head coach, as he announced his departure on social media this week.

“It was a pride and honour to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfilment,” the 63-year-old wrote on X.

Peseiro previously coached Porto and Al Ahly on club level as well as the Saudi Arabia and Venezuela national teams.

He served as Nigeria’s boss from May 2022; however due to financial issues faced by the Nigerian football federation, his departure comes as no surprise.

The Super Eagles have struggled with their qualification campaign as far as the 2026 Fifa World Cup goes, meaning that expectations on the next manager in line are sure to be high.
