Perhaps the end of the Wimbledon line for Serena Williams

After crashing out in the first round of the Wimbledon Grand Slam, Serena Williams said this may be the last time she plays at the prestigious event.

The 40-year-old lost her first round match against Harmony Tan in a three-set thriller that went past the three hour mark.

Williams remained cagey about her future in tennis. She said she was unsure whether she will compete at Wimbledon again.

“That’s a question I can’t answer. I don’t know. Who knows where I’ll pop up?” she said post-match.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner however did not want to be remembered for a first round defeat at a tournament where she has been so successful.

“Obviously not. You know me. Definitely not,” Williams said.

“I gave it all I could do. Maybe tomorrow I could have given more. Maybe a week ago I could have given more. But today that was what I could do. At some point, you have to be able to be okay with that.”

Williams returned to singles tennis almost a year after tearfully limping off centre court at Wimbledon last year.

After suffering during the year with an ankle injury, Williams said she had major doubts about the future of her tennis career.

But despite her doubts, she returned to tennis and claimed she could even make an appearance at the final Grand Slam of the year in the US Open.

“When you’re at home, especially in New York where I first won a Grand Slam, it is always special,” she said.

“There’s always motivation to get better and play at home.”

Williams is now ranked 1,204th in the world due to her absence, but consistently playing could be the key to getting back to her best.

“If you play week in, week out, or every three or four weeks there is a little more match toughness. You have to think if I was playing matches I wouldn’t miss some of those points,” she said.
