Some Western Cape parents are complaining about teachers dressed so inappropriately that their kids can’t concentrate on their lessons.
But the teachers have vowed to keep slaying.
One teacher, speaking in anonymity, feels that the parents are bullies.
“They have crossed the line. What we wear in school doesn’t have anything to do with them. Learners complaining to their parents about the teachers’ clothes need to focus on their studies.
“Learners don’t respect us because of their discussions with their parents,” the teacher said.
“We can’t be bullied like this, and their kids need to stop focusing on what we wear; they must put their energy into their studies.”
The teacher said they may not dress as if they are going to church but they are keeping up with the trends.
“We are young and follow fashion trends, but that doesn’t mean we wear shorts and skirts at school; we respect our jobs,” the teacher added.
Parent Ziphozethu Dodwana stands with the teachers.
“We cannot control what teachers must wear,” Dodwana said.
“Teachers must wear what they want and forget about bullies; they worked hard at school to ensure they get where they are today.”
Another parent, Andile Plaati, takes the opposite view. He said he will never support teachers wearing tight jeans at school.
“Jeans reveal their bodies. That alone distracts our kids,” he said.
Instead, he wants the Education Department to have a dress code for teachers.
Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Millicent Merton said there is currently no official national or provincial dress code for educators.
“The South African Council for Educators’ Code of professional ethics states that an educator should act in a proper and becoming way such that their behaviour does not bring the teaching profession into disrepute,” Merton said.
