Over one million special votes approved

The Independent Electoral Commission has already approved over one million applications for special votes ahead of the 29 May elections.

The IEC says applications for special votes for home visits or to vote in a voting station a day or two early close on Friday, 3 May.

The IEC window for special votes will close on 17 May for applicants who will be outside their voting districts on 29 May.

To simplify the voting process, the IEC has urged South Africans to vote where they are registered.

Previously, a voter could be given the national ballot paper even if they were outside their province but would not be given the regional or provincial ballot papers.

On Thursday, the IEC received complaints from people who said their online application system kept showing an error message.

The IEC said the special vote applications were for “home visits for those registered voters who are infirm or have impaired mobility”.

“These voters may apply to be visited at home or a place of confinement.

“The second category of special votes is available to any registered voter who wishes to vote early at their voting station.”

The IEC has advised applicants who will be outside their voting districts on election day to “apply for a Section 24A” but the link provided for the application has not been working.

Different applicants have registered complaints with the IEC regarding the problem.

The election timetable shows that special votes will be held on 27 and 28 May.
