Stellenbosch defender and South Africa U21 captain Oshwin Andries has died a week after he was discharged from hospital after being stabbed.
Police in Cape Town say Andries had been discharged from hospital but his situation deteriorated before being admitted again.
Andries succumbed to stab wounds at a Cape Town hospital on Saturday.
No arrests have been made following the fatal stabbing of the defender who would have turned 20 this month, on 24 February.
“He passed away in hospital on [Saturday] after his family took him to the hospital,” SAPS Western Cape spokesperson Captain Nowonga Sukwana told Scrolla.Africa.
“He was treated for a stab wound and released and then his family took him to hospital again last night where he passed on.
“Circumstances around his stabbing are still under investigation. No arrest has been made as yet.”
Andries was not part of the Stellenbosch squad that travelled to Gqeberha for a Premier Soccer League match against Chippa United which they won 2-1 on Saturday.
He last played for Stellies on 27 January in the Cape Derby where they triumphed 3-2 against Cape Town City at home.
Captain of South Africa Under-20 national team, Andries made his PSL debut in December 2021 against Baroka FC and made two appearances during his maiden season.
This term saw him improving as he featured in nine games across all competitions, including six starts.
After scoring against Royal AM in August 2022, Andries became the youngest ever scorer for the Cape Winelands side, who also announced his passing on.
“It is with deep sadness that Stellenbosch FC has learned of the untimely passing of promising young defender, Oshwin Andries,” the club said in a statement.
“The club is not in a position to provide further information at this stage and asks that his family’s privacy is respected in this difficult time of bereavement.
“Andries was a gifted young footballer who graduated from the SFC Academy to make his professional debut at the age of 18.
“His presence, both on the pitch and off it, will be sorely missed.”
Tributes continued pouring in for Andries on Sunday, with Pitso Mosimane revealing he had been closely monitoring the defender.
Mosimane said he even assigned his scouts to track Andries.
