Orlando Pirates fans should applaud their team, not abuse them

Menzi on Wednesday: the unruly behaviour of Orlando Pirates following their side’s cup exit last week leads Menzi Magubane to ask… are the fans appreciative enough?

It’s painful to see how Pirates fans have behaved after their club lost to RSB Berkane in the final of the CAF Confederation Cup last Friday.

My question is, who exactly do the supposed Pirates faithful support?

Pirates are the only South African team to play in the final of this competition and they have done it twice. They lost, we know that, but can’t their supporters be more appreciative?

Despite losing in the final, Pirates did all of South Africa a favour by gaining more CAF ranking points for the country.

Egypt and Morocco are leading in Africa with South Africa at number six for now.

I think the entire country should appreciate the Buccaneers because they were there to fly the South African flag in Nigeria.

Things would have turned out differently if the Soweto giants had won the Cup. They could have been the first South African team to ever win both CAF competitions.

In 1995 Pirates made history when they became the first South Africa club to win the Champions League. Mamelodi Sundowns followed 20 years later.

These are the only two teams in all of Southern Africa that have won this title.

However, the Buccaneers remain the historians after playing in the second Confederation Cup final. There is no South African team that has ever played in that competition’s final.

The first for the Buccaneers was back in 2015.

Despite losing to the Moroccans in Nigeria, Pirates managed to be in the top ten of the CAF club ratings. They are in tenth place while Sundowns are in fifth. Egyptian giants Al Ahly are leading the rankings.
