Sunrisers Eastern Cape beat the Pretoria Capitals by four wickets in the SA20 final as the fireworks went up at the Wanderers to draw the curtain on a great first season.
After only just making it into the knockout stages, Aiden Markram’s side left the best for last. The Eastern Cape unit won the toss and opted to field first, taking all 10 wickets to reduce the Capitals to a score of just 135.
Roelof van der Merwe was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4/31 in his four overs. Kusal Mendis was the only batter to cross 20 for Pretoria, who looked well off the side that topped the league stage with seven wins in 10.
The Sunrisers always looked comfortable in their chase, with Adam Rossington making 57 off 30 at the top of the order.
Seven maximums in the second innings was a treat to the capacity Bull Ring crowd, with Marco Jansen hitting the final runs with a six as well. The game was won with four wickets in hand and 22 balls to spare.
Man of the match Van der Merwe said post-match that the team got comfortable playing together at just the right time.
“Absolutely ecstatic. I am drained, I am tired. The boys played an unbelievable game today. So happy. The boys gelled after a while, we got to know each other better. It’s great to win here at the Wanderers today,” he said.
