‘Only we can remove him from the throne’ – Zulu King’s siblings warn

  • King Misuzulu’s siblings say only they have the power to remove him as Zulu King, not their half-brother Prince Simakade.
  • The royal family is deeply divided as Prince Simakade held a meeting with rebels who oppose King Misuzulu’s reign.

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s siblings have warned their half-brother Prince Simakade that they alone have the power to remove the Zulu king from his throne.

This comes after Prince Simakade held a meeting on Tuesday at the kwaDlamahlahla Royal Palace with other royal family members who oppose King Misuzulu’s reign.

Sources say the King’s grandmother, Queen Gwabini, attended the meeting with other royal rebels who wanted to remove him from power.

“They also called Queen Buhle kaMathe of the kwaDlamahlahla Royal Palace to be part of the meeting but she refused. Queen kaMathe’s son Prince Buzabazi is also a challenger for the throne and is supported by Prince Mbonisi kaBhekuzulu,” said a source.

The King’s male siblings told Scrolla.Africa they were angry about the meeting. They said the Will of their mother, Queen Regent Mantfombi kaSobhuza, gives them alone the power to remove the King.

“We cannot allow our kingdom to be run by the love child. We are going to fight that because Prince Simakade knows very well that he is the umlanjwane (love child) of our father King Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, and not legitimate to be the king,” said a source.

“The kingship belongs to kwaKhangelamankengana and if it means one of our sisters should take over the reign it will happen instead of giving the kingship away to Prince Simakade.”

One of the senior princes confirmed the meeting but wouldn’t give details.

“That meeting was strictly for the royal family members and I won’t be able to share any details. But I arrived there very late while the meeting had already started,” he said.

The Supreme Court of Appeal will soon rule on the matter after President Cyril Ramaphosa challenged the North Gauteng High Court’s December 2023 judgment.

In that ruling, the court set aside the president’s decision to recognise Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the Zulu King, claiming the process had not been carried out under Zulu customary law.
