One Ekurhuleni police officer died and another is fighting for his life after gunmen attacked them in Vosloorus early Sunday morning.
The attackers shot the off-duty officers at the corner of Nguza Road and Pelser Bridge in Extension 25 around 3am, then stole their car.
A witness who wants to stay anonymous heard the shots.
“There was one empty cartridge at the crime scene,” he said. “When he went out to check, he found two people lying on the side of the road.”
Paramedics declared one officer dead at the scene. The other was rushed to Alberton Hospital.
Police later found the dead officer’s grey Hyundai Tucson near Thelle Mogoerane Regional
Hospital in Leondale with a bullet hole in the driver’s window.
No arrests have been made and police don’t know why the officers were attacked.
Acting Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi spoke out against the attack.
“We hope those responsible for this heinous crime will be brought to book and face the consequences.
“As the EMPD, we send our heartfelt condolences to the families and wish the one officer a speedy recovery,” said Mkhwanazi.
