While the ANC continues to delay plans to nationalise the central bank, the Taliban has wasted no time in appointing a governor to Afghanistan’s central bank.
An image reported to be of Haji Mohammed Idris taking on his new role has circulated online.
The image is almost a standard promo photo of an official sitting at their desk. He’s typing away at his laptop either working hard or pretending to work hard.
He’s also holding an AK-47.
A fact checker called BOOM has since confirmed that the man in the image is not in fact Haji Mohammed Idris, but an unknown man sitting at an unknown desk.
Idris was announced as the governor of the central bank in August, just days after the Taliban seized power in Kabul.
Although he has no formal financial training or higher education, he was previously head of the Taliban’s finances, and has now been tasked with fixing Afghanistan’s war-crippled economy.
It is unclear whether Lesetja Kganyago, governor of the South African Reserve Bank, has sent a message of congratulations to Idris on his recent appointment.
