None of the vaccinated people who have died have been linked to the Covid-19 vaccine.
This is according to the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) who said that of the 86 reports of people who have died after receiving the Covid-19 jab, not a single case has been found to be related to any of the vaccines.
The cases were all reported between 17 May 2021 and 31 August 2021.
Of these cases 46 are still under investigation while the remaining 40 investigations have been completed, Sahpra said in a media briefing on Monday.
The regulator said that of the deaths, 34 were completely coincidental, while 13 people were infected with Covid-19 when they died.
Six cases were unclassifiable due to inadequate information. This is because Sahpra either lacked information about the case, or the available information was not complete.
National Immunisation Safety Expert Committee (NISEC) chairperson Professor Hannelie Meyer said that those who died were either infected with Covid-19 at the time or became infected with the virus shortly afterwards.
More than 14.6 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have so far been administered in South Africa.
