No camp too far for Broos’ ever-present Bafana duo

There seems to be an unbreakable bond between Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos and his two players Ronwen Williams as well as Nyiko Mobbie.

The South Africa skipper and the Sekhukhune United defender are the only two players to have never skipped any national team camp since Broos was appointed coach in May 2021.

They have been included in every squad the Belgian has selected in a show of faith in them by the coach.

“To represent our country is not easy,” Mobbie told Safa media when asked to explain his ever-presence in the national side under the former Cameroon trainer.

“But for me, I just listen to the coach on what he wants, so I think I have to keep on going. It’s not easy but I have to give my best each and every game I play because we don’t have a lot of games to play [in the national team].

“Sometimes, it will take maybe one or two months to play, so, when you get a chance, you have to give your best.”

Broos has been in charge of 17 matches and has handed chances to several players with the majority now out of the national team frame.

Mobbie explains how he has managed to have the coach maintain his trust in him even when he is struggling to stay on top of his game.

“I think it’s normal as a footballer [to be out of form] but I think the best way, if you think the game is not going the way you want, you have to stick to the basics,” he said.

“Play simple, defend if you have to defend.”

Interestingly, Mobbie is preferred by Broos ahead of the Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena who were being selected ahead of him at Masandawana.

But goalkeeper Williams appears to have no competition to knock him off as Bafana’s undisputed number-one stopper.
