It was another violent weekend in Nelson Mandela Bay, with at least nine people killed in shootings between Friday night and early Sunday morning.

In the first incident on Friday night, a Motherwell family suffered a devastating loss when their son, granddaughter, and a family friend were shot in their living room.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said three unknown suspects entered the home and shot Xolokazi Msizi, Gcobisa Mabuya, and Luthando Ngece.

Msizi, 27, died in her grandmother’s living room, while Ngece, 28, and Mabuya, 36, died after they were rushed to the Motherwell Clinic.

Nontembiso Ngece, the mother of Luthando and grandmother of Msizi, said the gunmen demanded that Msizi open her banking app and shot her when she said she had no money.

Police confirmed six other people were shot dead in separate incidents in Motherwell, the northern areas, and Kwazakhele.

Community activist Pamela Mabini said there is an urgent need for law enforcement to fix the ongoing gun violence in the city.

“We need law enforcement to come up with a plan, strategy, and action. We as citizens miss our friendly city,” Mabini said.
