It was no surprise when Swallows defender Njabulo Ngcobo was named PSL Defender of the Season on Sunday. On Monday his success story continued when he received his first Bafana Bafana call up.
Ngcobo, along with three other uncapped players, are part of the Bafana squad that will take on Uganda on Thursday in an international friendly at Orlando Stadium at 6pm.
Two Baroka players, Denwin Farmer and Evidence Makgopa, together with Ethan Brooks from TS Galax, joined Ngcobo.
Bafana assistant coach Cedomir Janevski has confirmed that Bafana will be without star striker Percy Tau and SuperSport United midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who were forced to pull out after contracting Covid-19.
“We are opening a new page and we will have meetings to prepare the team mentally,” said Janevski.
“We need them to be strong for the next couple of games, especially the qualifiers in September.”
He said Sipho Mbule was also forced into isolation after being in contact with his SuperSport United teammate. Other absentees from the original 19 players who were called up are Mamelodi Sundowns’s Mothobi Mvala, Rivaldo Coetzee and Mosa Lebusa.
The trio is said to have minor injuries and coach Hugo Broos’ assistants Janevski and Helman Mkhalele were quick to call up the four replacements.
Thursday’s match will see Janevski and Mkhalele in charge in the absence of Broos, who apparently has gone to Belgium to receive his second Covid-19 vaccination.
