The National Freedom Party (NFP) is in financial trouble and says it has no money to campaign for the upcoming general elections.
The party claims the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has blocked its funds.
Party leaders who didn’t want to be named told Scrolla.Africa that it is struggling to even do door-to-door campaigns.
“We can’t hold rallies like other political parties. Even putting up party posters is a struggle because we don’t have money for printing. We have our funds that are locked at IEC,” one of them said.
“Those funds are given to all political parties that are represented in the provincial legislatures and the National Assembly,” the source added.
NFP secretary general Teddy Thwala said the party had not received IEC funding since 2021.
“Due to internal squabbles, the party has not received its political party funding from the IEC. This is because there’s no clear indication from the party on who should be accountable to the IEC for these funds due to the infighting.”
Thwala said that the party is facing several court cases over the legitimacy of the leadership that was elected in Durban in December.
IEC electoral manager Mawethu Mosery told Scrolla.Africa that they couldn’t comment on the matter as it is still under serious discussion.
“We are waiting for the matter to be concluded,” said Mosery.
