New Chiefs boss rarely stays long in a job

Kaizer Chiefs and Nasreddine Nabi have agreed terms for him to take charge of Amakhosi.

That finally ends the search for the man to replace Molefi Ntseki as coach. The Tunisian is expected to bring three members of his backroom staff along with him.

Nabi’s appointment as Chiefs coach is imminent as he finishes his tenure at Moroccan side FAR Rabat.

After guiding FAR Rabat to finishing the Moroccan Botola league as runners-up to champions Raja Casablanca, they will play Maghreb Fez in the Throne Cup semi-final showdown on Sunday.

“I am currently focusing on the match against Maghreb Fez,” Nabi told Moroccan media.

“I tried to raise the morale of the players and told them that there is still a chance to win the Throne Cup.”

It has been an impressive last two seasons for Nabi, who also led Young Africans to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup during the 2022-23 term.

That has impressed Chiefs, who had to buy him out of his contract, which still had a season remaining.

The 58-year-old is well-travelled, having previously worked in Libya at Al Ahli Benghazi, Sudanese giants Al Hilal and Egyptian side Ismaily.

He has also had stints at the Italian amateur side Pont Donnaz Hone Arnad and Sudanese heavyweight side Al Merreikh.

Interestingly, Nabi has never coached a team in the top-flight league in his home country of Tunisia.

While his CV is impressive, especially given his performance during recent seasons, winning the Tanzanian league with Young Africans, and the work he is doing at FAR Rabat, one thing might concern Amakhosi fans.

Nabi rarely stays long in his job. At most of the clubs he worked at, he was often a one-season coach.

His longest tenure was the 26 months he spent at Young Africans, and his shortest was the 22 days he spent at Ismaily.

“The South African offer was not the only one. I received several offers,” Nabi said, confirming that he is a popular choice.

That statement could worry Chiefs fans, as Nabi could dump the Soweto giants and move on to another team in a flash.
