New bid to get rid of Ekurhuleni mayor

By Doreen Mokgolo

The ANC in Ekurhuleni has withdrawn its proposed amendment to the tabled motion of no confidence against the metro’s mayor, Sivuyile Ngodwana, of the African Independent Congress.

The decision was made to allow the council to deal with the no-confidence motion put forward by ActionSA.

The ANC’s proposed motion is for the party with a majority of members in the council to take  control of the metro. The ANC, with 75 councillors, has the majority.

The DA has also submitted proposed amendments that the council be dissolved and residents allowed to vote for a renewed mandate.

The proposed amendments have led to a delay in the process. On Thursday night the speaker of the council, the EFF’s Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, adjourned the sitting to seek legal advice on the two proposed changes.

The ANC’s sudden change of plans will cancel the speaker’s search for legal advice and allow for the motion against the mayor to continue without delay.

The council will meet on Thursday in a third attempt to remove the mayor.

This is the third motion of no confidence in the mayor since the new political term began. The DA and the EFF were each in power for just over a year before they were voted out by the coalition between the EFF and ANC.

The ANC’s Ekurhuleni regional task team leader, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, said the party decided to remove its proposed amendments to allow the council to deal with the motion as is.

“We have identified that our proposed amendments are now used to take technical decisions by the speaker to delay the process,” he said.

The DA’s caucus leader in the council, Tania Campbell, said only fresh elections will save the metro.

“The proposed amendment was vetoed and used as a reason to end the meeting by the speaker. No number of motions of no confidence will save the metro. This is the same as rearranging the deck of chairs on the Titanic.

“If the new executives include the EFF, the ANC, or both, the looting will continue and residents will continue to be deprived of services,” she said.
