Nelson Mandela Bay’s mayor, Gary van Niekerk, leader of the National Alliance, is expected to step down this week after the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decided that the party should lead in hung municipalities where it has the most seats.
On Sunday, ANC NEC member Bathabile Dlamini and provincial executive member Xolile Nqatha shared the news, explaining that the government of national unity will follow the NEC’s decisions.
This change is similar to what happened in Johannesburg, where Al Jama-ah’s mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda, was asked to step aside for the ANC’s Dada Morero.
Van Niekerk was reportedly asked to resign during a private meeting with the ANC’s provincial leaders two weeks ago.
The ANC’s regional chair and deputy mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, confirmed that the party is preparing for the switch.
“Parties in the government of local unity will be consulted, and we expect a positive outcome for the ANC to lead,” said Lobishe, adding that there is no conflict between the ANC and Van Niekerk, and they expect a smooth transition.
Sources suggest that Van Niekerk will resign soon and that Lobishe will succeed him. A council meeting is set for Thursday, where Lobishe will likely be chosen as the new mayor.
The ANC also wants control of the Safety and Security portfolio to step up its efforts to fight crime in the city.
