Namibian President Hage Geingob has died at the age of 82, less than three weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.
Geingob died on Sunday at Lady Pohamba Hospital in the capital, Windhoek, with his wife and his children at his side, acting president Nangolo Mbumba said in a statement posted on Geingob’s official Facebook page.
“The Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house,” Mbumba said.
Geingob’s office announced last month that he had begun treatment following the discovery of “cancerous cells” during a routine colonoscopy and gastroscopy.
South African president and Geingob’s long time friend Cyril Ramaphosa extended condolences to the Namibian government and its people, first lady Monica Geingob and her family.
“I am deeply saddened at this time as I reflect on the privilege I had as recently as October 2023 to be hosted by President Geingob, Madame Geingos and the cabinet on a working visit to Namibia,” said Ramaphosa.
“During the visit, we committed our two countries to even closer partnership, inspired in great measure by President Geingob’s passionate conviction about our shared future as nations and greater opportunities and prosperity for citizens on both sides of the Orange River.”
Geingob’s death comes as Namibia is preparing to hold its national elections in November. Geingob was serving his last term as president of the country.
Namibian reports reveal that former vice President, Nangolo Mbumba (82) has been sworn in as Namibia’s new President.
