Kwena Maphaka, a 17-year-old sensation from South Africa, has made an unexpected leap from high school to the Indian Premier League (IPL).

His remarkable journey began with a swift departure from his classes at St Stithians, helped by his Gauteng Lions teammate, Kagiso Rabada, through his sports agency KGR.

Maphaka’s entry into the IPL was made to replace the injured Sri Lankan player, Dilshan Madushanka.

Known for his strength as a left-arm fast bowler, Maphaka gained recognition during the ICC U-19 World Cup held in South Africa earlier this year, claiming 21 wickets and earning the title of player of the tournament.

His talent was further showcased in the CSA T20 Challenge while playing for the Lions.

The nature of Maphaka’s role with the Mumbai Indians, whether as an apprentice or active player, remains to be seen but his commitment to the IPL until the end of the competition in late May is confirmed.

Arrangements were made to ensure his academic pursuits were not neglected, with the Mumbai Indians organising a tutor for him.

The Mumbai Indians, tied with the Chennai Super Kings as the most successful teams in IPL history with five titles each, boast a coaching staff led by former Proteas player Mark Boucher.

Maphaka joins fellow South Africans Dewald Brevis and Gerald Coetzee in the team, which is owned by India’s wealthy Ambani family.
