Award-winning actress Michelle Botes, best known for her role as Cherel de Villiers-Haines in the SABC3 cancelled soapie Isidingo, has died at 62 years after a long illness with cancer.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) expressed deep sadness at her passing, praising her exceptional talent and lasting impact on South African television.

“Her exceptional talent brought the character to life, captivating audiences across the nation and leaving an indelible mark on South African television,” said the SABC in a statement.

“Her work reflected her dedication, versatility and commitment to her craft. The SABC extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. Michelle Botes’ contributions to the arts will forever be remembered, and her legacy will continue to inspire. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.

Her portrayal of Cherel, the nemesis of Papa G, played by the late Darlington Michaels, captivated audiences and cemented her as a household name.

Beyond Isidingo, Botes showcased her versatility in productions like Family Secrets, Konings and Onder Draai Die Onder Rond.

The SABC extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and colleagues, celebrating her enduring legacy in the arts.

Michelle Botes, born on 12 October 1962 in Cape Town, South Africa, was a celebrated actress renowned for her dynamic portrayals, particularly of complex villainous characters.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Speech and Drama from the University of Stellenbosch and a diploma in Education from the University of Cape Town.
