South African fashion designer Judy Sanderson will go down in history as the first African designer to win the Global Fashion Brand grant.
Judy won 40,000 euros (about R813,000) for the 2024-2026 grant as well as a two-year scholarship and mentorship programme sponsored by the Louis Vuitton group (LVMH) and Chanel in France.
The designer, who was born and raised in Nkowankowa township near Tzaneen in Limpopo, said her win is a milestone for designers from Africa.
She was one of three African designers competing for the grant with candidates from around the world.
“I’m honoured to be the vessel to pioneer the recognition of African designers on the international stage,” she said.
Judy said the prospect of tapping into the expertise of mentors affiliated with fashion houses like LVMH and Chanel present a valuable opportunity, and that the collaboration would grow her brand to new heights of success and recognition in the fashion industry.
“Securing funding for the next two years will significantly boost the execution of my vision for four new collections, covering the business from production to marketing and communication,” Judy said.
“With these resources, I aim to elevate the quality of photoshoots, refine marketing strategies, and enhance overall brand communication.”
Judy lives in Portugal with her husband Nuno Bernardo and their four children.
She established her brand in 2019 and has already achieved great milestones such as showcasing her work at both the Paris and London African Fashion weeks.
