Eastern Cape gospel artist Butho Vuthela believes that his grandmother’s teachings helped him to win at the 16th Crown Gospel Music Awards.
Vuthela is among the artists who walked away with their awards after the first leg of the ceremony.
The gospel music award ceremony, which has been a KwaZulu-Natal entertainment hallmark, was held for the first time at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday evening.
Vuthela won the best traditional song category.
“Our grandmother MaDlamini used to teach us gospel music when we were young. Everyone at home used to sing certain songs that were taught to us by our grandmother. So to win this award is the result of my grandmother’s teachings,” he said.
Eastern Cape is famously known for producing rugby and cricket players, as well as political struggle stalwarts.
It is the home of Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Makhaya Ntini, Chris Hani, Zozibini Tunzi, Siyamthanda Kolisi and many other legends.
Vuthela and the recent Metro FM award song of the year winner Betusile Mcinga are also joining the list through their gospel music.
