- Muvhango aired its final episode on SABC2 Tuesday after 28 years of bringing Venda language and culture to national television.
- Actor Gabriel Temudzani says the show was a movement that gave Venda people a platform and broke rural community stereotypes.
After nearly three decades on air, Muvhango broadcast its final episode on SABC2 this Tuesday, marking the end of a cultural era.
The popular drama, which began in 1997, has been celebrated for bringing the Venda language and culture to mainstream South African television.
Gabriel Temudzani, who played Chief Azwindini Mukwevho for many years, described the show as more than just work, it was a movement.
“Muvhango gave the Venda people a platform to showcase their talent, language, and culture. It brought people together nationwide and beyond our borders,” he told TimesLIVE.
Series creator Duma Ndlovu echoed these sentiments, calling Muvhango a groundbreaking production that lifted a once “ignored language” into one loved by viewers across the country.
Temudzani said that the show’s end leaves a gap, particularly in Venda representation on television.
“Muvhango broke stereotypes and gave rural communities the chance to be seen and understood,” he said.
Reflecting on his own journey, he said the series taught him leadership, the importance of family, and the value of community storytelling.
Looking ahead, Temudzani plans to continue this legacy through his media company, as well as ventures including a travel agency and motivational speaking.
His mission, he said, is to keep telling stories that connect with and uplift communities.
